iWeek2021 is online!

iWeek2021 is online! It is time to start the preparation of 6th edition of iWeek! Year 2020 has been very special in many ways. Most of us have been working from home and not been able to travel outside our own cities or countries.

Despite this life goes on and we would like to keep good practices alive - like the annual iWeek!! The iWeek2021 will take place online during the dates 25-29 January 2021. We'd like to welcome all our old and new friends to participate in our iWeek2021. We look forward to sharing your expertise on the fields of Communication, Media and ICT! Main themes in 2021 are: CURIOUS CREATIVES, GAME DESIGN, INTERACTIVE WEB, IoT HARDWARE & EMBEDDED SYSTEMS, VIRTUALIZATION & CLOUD SERVICES, VR/AR and UX DESIGN.

Expert lectures and Networking

We will keep the good elements of being international even online. The online iWeek consists of Expert lectures and presentations from Finland and abroad / Workshops / Networking / Promotion of exchange possibilities in our partner institutions. We will also arrange a R&D workshop where you can network with other participants, present your current projects or new ideas for future cooperation.

We will use Zoom as a lecturing and co-working platform. This year we would also like to welcome students from your institutions to participate in this online event.

Register yourself

Did we get your attention? If you got interested ask how to join iWeek from our organizers. If you are already familiar with the concept here is a link to registration. Deadline for teacher/staff registration is 20 November 2020.

Lectures

Here you will find descriptions of content for each lecture

Topic: What makes a security professional

Lecturer: Aronen, Matti
Time: Thursday 28th of Jan / 9-12 EET
-

Topic: Virtual projects

Lecturer: Barrezeele, Griet
Time: Wednesday 27th of Jan 9-12 EET
Griet will present UC Leuven-Limburg and the (virtual) projects she is organising.

Topic: Crosscultural Design

Lecturer: Best, Saskia, Hauke, Judith
Time: Monday 25th of Jan / 13-16 EET
What are the differences between cultures and how can we incorporate the culture of the user in our design? When designing cross cultural products, designers not only have to deal with different languages, dialects and dimensions of national culture but also with cultural differences in color psychology and mental models. In this lecture/workshop Judith Hauke and Saskia Best will guide you through some of the important aspects for cross cultural design

Topic: PORTALS - Play with distance

Lecturer: Erdmann Carina
The online workshop will explore a hybridization of digital and physical play from a Game Design perspective. It takes place online in a remote collaboration with the students of the Meaningful Play course at LUCA, Genk (BE). Over the course of three days the participants will be engaged in play and design processes via online conference tools such as Jitsi or Discord. How can the surrounding environment be incorporated in worldbuilding? What are rules that enable meaningful dialogue? How to integrate movement into screen interactions? And can distant places share one physical game space?

Building a gesture-controlled browser game

Lecturer: Katerborg, Erik
Time: Thursday 28th of Jan / 13-16 EET
Using the webcam to detect gestures which control a small browser game. Technologies will be javascript and css.

Topic: A crash introductory course on AI, machine learning and deep learning

Lecturer: Linares, Jordi
Time: Tuesday 26th of Jan / 13-16 EET
There is no doubt we are living a dramatic paradigm change and new possibilities from a new hype in AI. With AlexNet in 2012, neural networks and deep learning have move AI to a new level difficult to imagine some years ago. There's no way back and new breakthroughs are emerging every year in this field approaching machines to the till now unique human cognitive possibilities. We will introduce the basic concepts of AI and families, and we will pay attention to machine learning and, more specifically deep learning. Skipping as much as we can the maths background, we will see why this is a before and after not only in computer science but in the future of science and technology and human society.

Topic: Importance of creativity and key principles from the MIT Media Lab for generating new understandings of digital media

Lecturer: Morrison, John
Time: Monday 25th of Jan / 9-12 EET
The topic is centred on learning from the mindsets and creative practices of pioneers, such as Georges Méliès, Dziga Vertov and Jean Rouch. Then applying these to help us move beyond functionalist views of technology to construct new possibilities beyond the current horizon of understanding.

Topic: Streaming for many

Lecturer: Quinn, Patrick
Time: Tuesday 26th of Jan / 9-12 EET
"Over the last year I have been involved in setting up and using low cost streaming systems at a music festival and for a local football club. The advances in network and AV technologies have allowed streaming of events to be made much more widely available, made all the more relevant in the current pandemic. I will be talking about these examples in comparison to mainstream broadcasting and sharing experiences from these real world examples."

Topic: Parametric modeling with Grasshopper - Rhino

Lecturer: Voltas, Jordi
Time: Thursday 28th of Jan / 9-12 EET
Parametric modeling using generative tools is an advanced method to obtain organic shapes. Highly used in Architecture and Industrial Design, Rhino-Grasshopper software allows users to generate, graphically and algorithmically, shapes that otherwise would be extremely high time-consuming.

Topic: Best practices for agile HMI development to accelerate UX-innovation

Lecturer: Wallin, Kalle
Time: Wednesday 27th of Jan / 9-12 EET
Automotive UX innovation requires processes which enable rapid HMI prototyping and fast design iteration, from the concept phase all the way through production.
What questions should be asked to ensure the final product feels polished and has a superior UX? What talent is needed in a team promoting new ways of working, including constant usability testing from the earliest stages of a project?
As a concrete example, we will take a look on highlights from a case study with a luxury OEM whose small HMI team created a distinctive, high-quality, multi-screen UX in a highly compressed schedule.
