About the event and organizer

iWeek

Each and every year since 2015 we, the staff from infromation and communication technology in cooperation with some of our colleagues from Institute of design, have arranged the international week for our students.

Most of the students will not "internationalize" themselves and therefore this is a valuable opportunity to have a feeling what it is like to have been taught by a person who is not a native finnish teacher.

This has been a small game changer and those who have had a student exchange experience in their mind, but didn't have the guts to leave abroad, have gotten a final push from this event.

Visitors

For visitors this has been a start for a new semester and therefore this has been placed at the start of the year. Most of the European Univerisities start their spring semester after this event and it has given a possibility to meet lot of people here in Lahti.

Students

All the lectures / workshops are given in computer rooms / classrooms at the campus. We try to arrange an opportunity to join online, but it is not guaranteed that all events can be streamed. So to get best out of this: Come to campus, meet the visitors!

Topics

Topics are presented in the order they occure in the program

Development of an iOS Learning App - Harder than you think

Prof. Dr. Daniel F. Abawi

As a development project I am implementing an iOS Learning App for students (to learn a specific topic of Operations Research). In this lecture / workshop I will give an overview over the development stages / challenges / specific topics of the Apple ecosystem and what things to consider while developing an app. Some aspects are harder to get them work, some are not. And only some of them are related to programming. So, many challenges are beside of the programming part. This session is mix of a lecture and a workshop. Students should work in groups and discuss together and with me. No programming skills are required. The topic is related in between "Interactive Web"; "UX Design" ... I would call It "Application Design and Development"

Emerging Trends in Generative AI: Core Principles and Foundation Models

Jordi Linares, Juan Jesus Izquierdo, Isabel Ferri Mollá

This workshop delves into the heart of Generative AI, a new player in the technological AI surge of the past decade. Participants will gain insights into the essential neural network architectures underpinning this field, the array of available tools enhancing the work of designers and developers, the critical role of Foundation Models, and an analysis of how this groundbreaking shift is reshaping the landscape of human creativity.

Artificial Intelligence and Games

Gonzalo A. Aranda Corral

A first approach on how to apply some techniques of AI to model the behaviour of players in Games.

Health design for dementia and autism

Inti Mansour, Myrte Thoolen

As a society, we face increasing challenges to include people despite mental and physical challenges and offer them a better quality of life and care. Avans University of Applied Sciences joined by partners are designing the future home in the city of Breda in the Netherlands.

Picture this: immersing yourself in a day of creative exploration where you get to observe, imagine, and craft the home of the future. Your mission? Design a space infused with interactive products or cutting-edge technologies tailored for either a person with dementia or someone with autism.

It's not just a challenge; it's an opportunity to shape the future of living spaces and make a tangible impact on the lives of those facing unique challenges. Join us in this exciting endeavour to create a future home that's not only functional, but also enriching and inclusive!

Value Proposition Design

Roeland Hooiring, Jurgen Van Raak

Introduction in development based on added value for a specific target audience. Innovation from a different perspective (the job to be done!). & Tips and tricks for intercultural communication in English

Why you should care about UX Design?

Rosó Balta Salvador

If you intend to develop a digital product, whether it's a mobile app, a game, a website, or any other digital platform, it's crucial to consider the potential users, their needs, and how they will interact with the interface. This is essential for ensuring the success of your project. In this workshop, we will teach how to incorporate UX practices into the digital product development process through hands-on exercises.

Lightroom Classic - an introduction to the possibilities for creatives

Jürgen Doom

Lightroom Classic is a very powerful raw converter, database and organisational tool for every professional in the creative field. In this course we'll look at how to organise images (import/export & Library module), talk about the newly introduced Artificial Intelligence for developing images (and synching them over large amount of images) in the Develop module and the creative tools the Print module offers us. The workshop will consist of both theory and practice (exercises). Students will be asked to actively participate by doing small assignments, in order to get to know the program.

Syrup Waffle Innovation

Julia Luteijn, Saskia Best

The stroopwafel (syrup waffle), a timeless Dutch confection, serves as the inspiration for this workshop. Your mission is to reimagine this iconic snack by incorporating it into a unique cultural narrative, complemented by interactive technology and sensor integration.

Netlogo Agent applied to gaming

Rodriguez Roman Miguel Angel

Intelligent agents aim to develop its own behavior using simple rules in the local environment. The session will introduce theconcept of intelligent agents system trough examples in a practical workshop oriented develop simulations that express a complex collective behaviour using Netlogo, a powerful yet simple to learn tool.

Game On: Unleashing Creativity

Eva Sørum Poulsen

Game On: Unleashing Creativity with Design Thinking in Game Design, UX, and Web Development" is a tailor-made workshop specifically designed for first and second-year engineering and technology students. This interactive session delves into the world of Design Thinking, a revolutionary approach that combines creativity, empathy, and rationality to solve complex problems and create user-centric designs. Whether you're passionate about game design, fascinated by the intricacies of user experience (UX), or intrigued by the creative possibilities of web development, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore how Design Thinking can transform your ideas into innovative solutions.

Immersive storytelling: The Self Conscious House - The future of living; Living together with your home

Raymond Sparreboom, Nina Kramer

Experience an interesting journey into the future of living in which your home is no longer just a place to live, but an active and conscious partner in your life. Data and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming our homes to a new level of autonomy and engagement. What are your personal wishes, needs and ethical considerations? How far are you willing to go in this transformation? During the workshop you will participate in our virtual future city, where you will be exploring, designing and sharing your personal preferences and views on the future of living in and with your self conscious house.

Inclusive Personas?!

Saskia Best, Julia Luteijn

The best designers are, by their nature, problem solvers. Expanding that mindset to design “inclusive personas” can spur more innovation and creativity. Traditional personas have a potential to cause bias and exclusion. “Inclusive personas” are quiet a popular phrase these days, but what exactly are they? Why are they important? In this interactive lecture we will try to find some answers, work on small exercises, and explore together the way to design more inclusive personas.

Parametric modeling with Grasshopper - Rhino

Jordi Voltas

Parametric modeling using generative tools is an advanced method for obtaining organic shapes. Widely used in architecture and industrial design, Rhino-Grasshopper software enables users to generate shapes in a graphic and algorithmic manner, which would otherwise be extremely time-consuming.

From idea to AI

Chidi Nweke

This talk guides you through the essential steps of turning an idea into a functional AI application. We'll explore key considerations like data collection, the trade-offs between training your own model or employing AI services, and the practical aspects of MLOps, including deployment and monitoring. Additionally, we'll discuss the financial aspect of hosting AI models, especially those requiring GPU resources, to help you make informed decisions about developing and scaling your AI project.

Applied AI Ethics

Erik Kluijtmans

AI is rapidly becoming more important and prevalent in our world. Breakthroughs are stacking up and AI systems are impacting everything everywhere: from social media filters, smart chatbot to recommendations … but AI is not always for good! There is a need of applied ethics process to deal and reduce moral problems and ethical risks. Lets apply it together!
